The Distractions

What will you do if suddenly endowed with ten million dollars?

I venture to say that everyone will deal with the situation differently. Some will take a good holiday, and put aside the bulk of the money to fund and start his retirement. At the other end, some will use the $10 million to try and make another $10 million.

The latter category would strive for $50 million after achieving $20 million. With each accomplishment they will go for the next target, which may not necessarily be monetary. They are busy chasing a well-defined goal and have no time for thinking about "less important" stuff.

The first category of people being satisfied with having enough, whether it be $10 million or $100,000, is the problematic one.

It is impossible for anyone who has not attained it to understand how it is like to be satisfied with having enough. If and when a logical thinking scientist has attained enough, the next natural question is: "That's it?" More analysis will lead to the question on the meaning of life (which ends with death). And the answer will be "It doesn't matter." If your answer is not the same, then you have not thought hard enough.

Whether you pick up a club and smash the head of the person next to you or give a million dollars to help the poor, it doesn't matter. The shooter who mows down defenseless students in a school can said to have achieved a level of enlightenment that the brilliant scientist lacks. The shooter really gets it that it doesn't matter.

As long as a person has something unaccomplished, whether it be going after that pot of gold, or finishing a simple hobby, or trying to read this page, he is momentarily distracted from questioning the meaning of life. But when he finally comes around to seeking it, there is no answer.

A Christian who believes in the Creator does not have this problem. Let's go back to the Space Invader game. What's the meaning of life for the space invader? As long as it performs according to the code you have written, you the Maker are happy. It would have fulfilled the purpose for which it was created.

The purpose of a created creature is to do the will of the Creator. It is as simple as this. Apologies for the anti-climax.

Why then are atheist scientists busy cracking their heads solving problem after problem, trying to make the world a better place? Answer: because it matters! And they know it.
